Trial is the monthly journal of the American Association for Justice (“AAJ”), formerly American Trial Lawyers Association (“ATLA”). Its issue for October 2017 is entitled “SEEKING JUSTICE.”

10/17 Trial features 6 vehicle accident cases in its “Verdicts & SETTLEMENTS”. Id. at 10-20. “Motorist strikes teen skateboarding in crosswalk” marquees an $11,000,000.00 2016 California jury award, which the Defendants settled for $8,300,000.00. Id. at 18.

In 2016, “Snowmobile guide’s negligence leads to tow participants death,” the New York parties settled for $7,750,000.00 just before closing argument at jury trial. Id. at 10, 12. “Deprivation of due process” reports a $9,030,000.00 2016 Missouri settlement for wrongful death of an arrestee who drowned when taken into state police custody by boat. Id at 12, 14.

“Tractor-trailer makes unsafe lane change” covers a $5,000,000.00 2016 Georgia settlement. Notably, Plaintiff’s counsel escalated its demands from $500,000.00 to $800,000.00 to $1,800,000.00 to $2,500,000.00 to $2,950,000.00 to $5,000,000.00 when not accepted! Id at 14, 16.

“Failure to properly align switch” highlights a $3,850,000.00 2017 California settlement for wrongful death due to railroad train car impact. Id at 20. Finally, “Improper Lookout” notes a $2,730,000.00 2016 Pennsylvania jury award for a commuter bus causing a pedestrian to suffer leg amputation. Id. at 16, 18.
